Although the formal Yahoo logo was in red before 2009, there was also a purple version along with the original Yahoo jumping "Y" guy. The purple logo had never been officially introduced until May 2009,  Yahoo launched the new homepage with purple theme and new purple logo which has no border and shadow. Standardizing around the purple logo will create a consistent experience for Yahoo! users, advertisers and employees, and it will strengthen our brand going into the next decade.

It was founded by Stanford University graduate students Jerry Yang and David Filo in January of 1994 and incorporated on March 2, 1995. The Web site started out as "Jerry and David's Guide to the World Wide Web" but eventually received a new moniker with the help of a dictionary. The name Yahoo! is an acronym for "Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle," but Jerry and David insist they selected the name because of its definition: "rude, unsophisticated, uncouth."
